The Low Service Fee Bait-and-Switch
A cheap service call fee gets the technician in the door. Once the inspection is done, the quote climbs fast, often with pressure to approve the work on the spot.
The Unnecessary Replacement Scam
You’re told you need new springs, cables, rollers and an opener when only one part is actually broken. Some technicians claim working parts are about to fail so they can replace them too.
The “We Can’t Adjust Your Springs” Line
Some companies say it’s unsafe to adjust your springs, then push a $1,000+ replacement instead. Most reputable companies will adjust springs that are still in good shape. - A generic business name. Scammers often rotate through vague names like “Garage Door Repair” or “Garage Door Service” that aren’t tied to a registered local business.
- No physical address. If a company only has a phone number or email and no showroom or office you can visit, be cautious.
- An unmarked vehicle or no ID. Legitimate technicians usually arrive in a company-branded vehicle and can show identification.
- Requests for upfront payment, cash only or payment to a personal account.

In August 2026, WPXI in Pittsburgh reported on a homeowner who searched online for her trusted installer and instead reached a scam operation that billed her $11,000 for a job worth about $2,200. That same summer, Rockford News First warned that scammers were targeting homeowners in Central Illinois with a garage door repair scheme.
In Rochester, N.Y., News10NBC investigated fake garage door websites using local phone numbers and followed up with the story of a repairman who arrived in an unmarked truck. In Minneapolis, KSTP reported that a legitimate local garage door company and its customers were targeted by a nationwide scam. And in Wisconsin, the Better Business Bureau warned homeowners about emergency repair companies that inflate the work and parts needed for a repair.
