They can weigh hundreds of pounds, they’re used multiple times every day for home entry and security, and children, pets and vehicles move underneath them all the time.
They’re garage doors. Although they’re the largest, heaviest moving device in most homes, most people don’t think about them until something goes wrong.
The key to continuous safe operation is to keep them properly maintained, according to Randy Oliver, president of Hollywood-Crawford Door Company.
“Preventive maintenance is critical to the safe operation of overhead doors,” Oliver said. “Just as other systems in your home are serviced annually, garage doors should be inspected each year as well, even if they appear to be working well.”
To help San Antonio homeowners make sure their doors are in top working condition, Hollywood-Crawford Door Company is offering free, no-obligation residential garage door inspections during Garage Door Safety month this May. The free checks are available throughout the company’s service area, which includes San Antonio, Boerne, Bulverde and New Braunfels. “An annual inspection by a professional can help identify a small problem and fix it before it turns into a bigger problem,” Oliver says.
National Garage Door Safety Month comes as COVID-19 restrictions start to lift and families become busier, making it an ideal time for a free professional inspection. The company and its technicians are following current government and CDC health and safety guidelines.
Hollywood-Crawford also offers a series of quick tests to quickly that homeowners can perform monthly to determine if a garage door is operating safely:
- Check the sides of the garage door for properly installed photo eyes (black sensors), mounted no higher than 6 inches off the floor.
- Block the photo-eye with an object over 6 inches tall, and press the garage door opener’s close button. The door should not close.
- Lay a 1.5-inch high object on the ground in the door’s path and press the close button. The door should reverse off this object.
- If the door fails any of these tests, call a reputable, professional garage door service company. Find an insured, well-established company with a local brick-and-mortar office. Check their reviews online and look for members of reputable trade associations, such as the International Door Association, which has strict ethics policies, or the Institute of Door Dealer Education (IDEA), which offers accreditation for garage door dealers and certification for door technicians. Get a firm estimate before authorizing work.
Hollywood-Crawford is the only garage door dealer in the San Antonio area to have earned the Angie’s List Super Service Award every year since 2007 and the only one accredited by the Institute of Door Dealer Education and Accreditation (IDEA).
